What Is the Oldest Suburb in Canberra?

Canberra has a variety of different suburbs that vary in size and age. Each suburb has their own set of history that comes with it as well. So the question on everyone’s lips, which suburb is the oldest suburb in Canberra? You would think it would be a quick and easy answer but it is not. On a quick internet search, Wikipedia told me that Kingston is the oldest suburb but after researching a few different sites and stumbling upon the Archives ACT site, I discovered that it was not just one suburb, that in fact it was a whopping twenty-two suburbs that were equally the first and now oldest suburbs in Canberra. These suburbs are Acton, Ainslie, Braddon, Capital Hill, City, Curtin, Deakin, Dickson, Forrest, Fyshwick, Griffith, Hughes, Kingston, Lyneham, Narrabundah, O’Connor, Piallago, Red Hill, Reid, Symonston, Torrens, and Yarralumla. All of these suburbs were registered on 20 September 1928. It’s funny to think that the furthest south suburb used to be Torrens and that the furthest north suburb was Ainslie. How we have grown and changed as a city over the years.
