Planning a trip from Canberra to Melbourne? Whether it’s for business, pleasure, or a bit of both, understanding your travel options can make your journey smoother and more enjoyable. Here are the basics to help you navigate your travel plans effectively and make the most of your trip!
Driving Times From Canberra To Melbourne
It takes approximately 6h and 45 minutes to drive from Canberra to Melbourne via the Hume Highway and the M1, for a total driving distance of 660 kilometres. This is the most direct route, but I always find it a bit dull – if you want to opt for a scenic route, you can take the coastal route (960km). While this will add a lot more travel time and overnight stop to your trip, it’s a get chance to explore Australia’s east coast and the beautiful beaches it has to offer.
The Best Stop Between Canberra And Melbourne
Direct route: Albury is a major regional city almost exactly halfway between Canberra and Melbourne, making it the perfect place to get out and stretch your legs. There are plenty of cafes where you can have lunch.
Sometimes I take a slight detour to stop at Rutherglen, one of Australia’s best wine regions. It only adds about 20 minutes to the trip, and, in my experience, it’s well worth it. There are some fantastic vineyards to explore and eat at. If you don’t feel like stopping for a long lunch, stop in at Parker Pies in the centre of Rutherglen instead. The pies are so good that I always get some frozen to take home!
Coastal route: Lakes Entrance is the most popular place to stop on the scenic route. It’s a beautiful seaside town renowned for its picturesque setting at the entrance of the Gippsland Lakes, the largest inland network of waterways in Australia. There are plenty of secluded beaches, fishing spots, and great places to eat. You can also check out Ninety Mile Beach, a stunning, unspoiled stretch of sand that separates the Gippsland Lakes from the Bass Strait.

How to Find Cheap Flights for Your Canberra to Melbourne Trip
Securing affordable flights is a priority for many travellers. Start by comparing prices across different airlines, including Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jetstar. Booking in advance and being flexible with your travel dates can also lead to significant savings.

Choosing the Right Airline for Your Journey
The airline you choose plays a big role in your travel experience. Qantas Airways, Virgin Australia, and Regional Express (REX) all offer varying levels of service, from basic economy to luxury business class. When making a decision, you have to look beyond price – consider factors such as luggage allowances, in-flight amenities, flexible tickets, and frequent flyer programs. Sometimes, the cheaper base tickets end up costing more than you’d expect if baggage isn’t included.
Direct Flights vs. Indirect Routes When Flying From Canberra To Melbourne
While direct flights from Canberra to Melbourne are quick and convenient, indirect routes are cheaper alternatives. However, consider the additional travel time and potential layovers, which could turn a simple trip into a longer journey. Assess your priorities to decide which option suits you best.

If by chance you’re afraid of flying and without a car, you still have other options: the train or the bus. It takes approximately 14 hours to get to Melbourne via train from Canberra, and you can expect to pay about $60 one way. You can book online through NSW Train Link. The trains depart from the Canberra Kingston Train Station and arrive at the Southern Cross Station, right in the centre of Melbourne. While this is the longest way to get to Melbourne, the trains offer panoramic views of some beautiful landscapes with the added benefit that you can get up, stretch your legs, and buy food along the way.
if 14 hours is too long for you, Greyhound Australia operates a bus from Canberra to Melbourne. The bus, which takes 8 hours, will cost you around $90. You can book online and check the timetable on their website. The direct bus departs from the Canberra Civic Coach stop on the corner of London Circuit and East Row and arrives at the Southern Cross Coach Terminal Station.

While the bus is the cheapest way to get to Melbourne from Canberra, I tend to avoid it at all costs. As someone of above-average height, my legs just can’t take the lack of room that long!
Whichever method of travel you choose, you’re sure to enjoy your trip. Although I love Canberra, a little getaway down to Melbourne never goes astray!
