What Time Zone Is Canberra?

Australia comprises of 7.692 million square kilometres and is the sixth largest country in the world. Being such a large, vast country, it’s no surprise that some of our cities will have different time zone’s. Our Australian Capital Territory is not the exception of that either.

What is the Canberra timezone?

Canberra runs off Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) or Universal Time Coordinated (UTC/GMT +10). Canberra shares time with other cities in Australia such as Sydney, New South Wales, Melbourne, Victoria and Brisbane, Queensland. Our capital city also operates on daylight saving time during early October and the following April each year. New South Wales and Victoria also follow this time change each year though Brisbane does not during the warmer months. Brisbane is an hour behind Canberra during the months of October though to April each year. Other cities such as Adelaide, South Australia and Darwin, Northern Territory are half an hour behind Canberra time and Perth, Western Australia is two hours behind (3 hours with daylight saving time).

Time zone’s outside of Australia

If you’re anything like us and thought that Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane were the only three locations that shared time with our bush capital, Canberra, you will find that there is another location outside of Australia that shares the same time zone as Canberra. That city is Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. Interesting hey! It makes sense though because if you look at it on a map, it is located above and slightly off to the left of Canberra.

To put into perspective of exactly what time zone Canberra is located in, New York in the United States of America, is 10 hours behind Canberra. Say it’s midday (12pm) in Canberra, in New York it will be 10pm the night before. Let us know in the comments what you’re thoughts are on time zones!
